An insight into Reunion specificity
People think of the Indian Ocean islands as small corners of Paradise, with wonderful sandy beaches and beautiful lagoons. Reunion is a different kind of Paradise, which will delight both outdoor enthusiasts as well as those who enjoy discovering somewhere different.
A world within a world: Reunion is waiting to be known. It has an interesting multicultural and multicolour society, awesome landscapes and unique flavours ready to be discovered.
Reunion is a land of contrasts with its lagoons, beaches, volcanoes and natural cirques. Visitors going to Salazie, Mafate or Cilaos will be impressed and delighted to hike in these exceptional and spectacular cirques of Reunion. Those cirques are still being built by natural erosion of volcanic soils. Visitors will discover picturesque villages and a mixed population, not to mention the spas at the Cirque de Cilaos. There are cliffs, gushing waterfalls and tropical forest, with a rugged beauty that visitors fall in love with.
The Piton de la Fournaise continues to be the emblem of Reunion. Today La Fournaise, 3070 metres above sea level, is one of the most active volcanoes on earth. As it is under constant surveillance by volcanologists, authorised visits on the flanks of the volcano are safe. “La Maison du Volcan” should not be left aside as it is a very remarkable museum with many interesting facts to be discovered.
Reunion lies close to Mauritius and is something of an enigma, with villages tucked away on the slopes of steep craters, an almost lunar landscape near the “Furnace”, and waterfalls tumbling from on high. The island has high inland mountains and it is a great place for more extreme sports like river rafting and paragliding, as well as for walking and trekking or spending a night in a mountain refuge.
Reunion is well known for its scuba diving. The best dive sites are off Saint Gilles les Bains coast. Day or night diving can be enjoyed by both beginners and certified divers.
Of course, guests can also just relax under the shade of a palmtree, sipping the local rum, or strolling around charming local villages. As well as the sheer beauty of the island, visitors can also experience a local culture that is quite different, influenced by the European, African and Asian origins of the people.
Grand Hôtel du Lagon and Hôtel Le Récif have the unique advantage of being located, on one of the most beautiful coasts of the island. The water temperature is just fantastic at any time of the year varying between 22 to 29 degrees. This popular holiday region, for both the islanders and tourists, St Gilles, at the heart of it, is a lively and exuberant town all year long, with its shops, bars and restaurants which are remindful of St Tropez in France. This seaside resort is ideal for surfing and water skiing. There is also a golf course, Golf du Bassin Bleu, nearby. Hotel Le Récif offers convivial and family orientated accommodations. |
